Unusual, intimate and a little wild [and quite unique], A River House is situated in the Wainiha Valley, one of the last strongholds of old Kauai. Wai is the Hawaiian word for water and water is indeed the focal point of this home. From the lanai, two watercourses are immediately evident: a stream...view full description cascading melodically into three pools and a wild rockstrewn river roiling its way down to the nearby ocean beach. The flowing waters immediately fill your senses with their peaceful music and are situated amidst the privacy of three incredibly verdant acres.Bed sizes: Main house - queen, Bird's Nest - Queen, Cottage - Queen. We found the perfect relief from our hectic mainland lives. Enjoyed: beautiful views, dips in the river, afternoon fresh papaya shakes from the tree, lounging in the shade on the deck, listening to the birds, napping with the kitty-cat that lives there, walking on the road, amazing spacious landscaping, snorkeling at nearby beaches and showering in the outdoor shower.
Thanks to the owners for allowing strangers into their beautiful, soulful home. This home gave us the Hawaiian vacation we wanted -- peaceful, relaxing, beautiful location, old-Hawaii feel.
Difficult to review this rental because loving it or not is quite subjective. Some found it too remote -while others loved that. All could agree that the grounds were breathtaking though -PARADISE!
This home was absolutely beautiful, relaxing and set in a private lush garden by the river. We loved it!
We have already recommended this place. it was an awesome location and beautiful property. The only thing that ReMax or the owner needs to aware of is a few of the screens on the sliding glass doors at the main house were ripped at the bottom, so the potential of bugs coming in at night was there. But,we left them open anyway (no a/c) and we personally had no real mosquito problem. Just thought you should know. But we would definately stay there again, we loved it. It was perfectly clean and maintained and stocked fully with anything you might need. The location was very tranquil.
While the house and grounds were beautiful and appeared well maintained we were not happy at all. The lack of air conditioning made it difficult to stay in the hot (it was in the high 90's) and very humid house during the day. More importantly there were bugs everywhere. The kitchen was infested with ants and we found live cockroaches in my daughters bed in the loft house as well as lizards in all three structures. Needless to say my daughter refused to sleep in the the loft house after the cockroach issue and slept on the couch. It was imposible to be outside at night due to the over abundance of mosquitos. Also, the hot water in the loft house did not work so showers and hot water for the laundry were imposible. Lastly the refrigerator is rusty and does not have an ice maker. Honestly, the amount that we paid to rent the house was excessive for what we had to deal with. I wish I could be more positive about our stay. We had looked forward to staying at the house for a long time but honestly we just couldn't wait to get home.
When we arrived, the refrigerator was not cooling. We had just bought $150 worth of groceries, so this was a big deal to us. A call to the emergency number eventually got us a delivery of an ice chest over two hours later. Thereafter, no one ever called to check our situation and no one ever came out to fix the refrigerator. The refrigerator ended up working the next day (we think someone left it open before our stay and it was just really inefficient), but we felt like management did a poor job handling it.Also, the place was really dirty. There were crumbs left on the table, sticky spots on the lanai, and our bathroom mirror was a mess. The floor was also pretty dusty and there were cobwebs in spots. Given the unusually high $182 cleaning fee, we expected a cleaner place upon check-in.We also found an unplugged bug killer sitting out on the lanai and a dead tree limb. Why were these there? The sink cabinet door had been removed leaving an unsightly view under the sink for the entire time. Also, there was no scrubber to clean dishes, so we bought our own.All in all, we feel like the place is poorly managed and falling into disrepair. We would not recommend it or any other Remax property.

Aloha Mr. Eisenhauer, We thank you so much for your review. We will be working with the owners to help bring this property up to the RE/MAX standards. We would like to apologize that you had to deal with these cleaning issues and maintenance items. Again we will doing some major inspecting of the home and working with the owners to make the necessary upgrades and we have already been working with the cleaners to make sure they are more attentive to this home. We loved our stay at the River House and found the property to be everything we hoped for and more. The home was beautiful and comfortable and the location was "the best". Our only complaints were a few problems that were resolved by property management. (1) the home had not been cleaned from the last renter when we arrived and we were placed for a night in another home in Princeville (2) when arriving back to The River house for our stay we found a six-pack of our beer missing (3) we ran out of propane in the middle of cooking breakfast one morning. Aside from these things, we found the house itself to be incredible!!
I think the title says it all. This house and its idyllic location are what you imagine a tropical paradise to look, feel and smell like.
much more interesting and fulfilling than a place on the beach. This tropical paradise was unique; we would go back in a heartbeat if we got the chance!
We spent the first 5 days of our Honeymoon here. We wanted a peaceful, private retreat of natural beauty. this property fits that description perfectly. In a beautiful, well-appointed home, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation with the sound of two rivers in the backyard, we were in the perfect place.... our own private Eden.....!!!!
Our week at River House was simply perfect. My husband and I were thrilled with the house and grounds. We love to cook, so the well appointed kitchen was a delight. We will certainly return.
